As you may or may not know, Halloween is celebrated on the 31st October each year. Traditionally this is an American holiday but slowly other countries such as Australia are starting to join in the fun of Halloween. Many people hold parties and go trick or treating where they dress up and roam the neighborhood knocking on doors. Traditionally the children are given lollies and other nice surprises but on researching I actually came across a really interesting piece of information about trick or treating.
This is directly from Wikipedia:
At one time, candy apples were commonly given to children, but the practice rapidly waned in the wake of widespread rumors that some individuals were embedding items like pins and razor blades in the apples. While there is evidence of such incidents, they are quite rare and have never resulted in serious injury. Nonetheless, many parents assumed that such heinous practices were rampant because of the mass media. At the peak of the hysteria, some hospitals offered free X-rays of children’s Halloween hauls in order to find evidence of tampering. Virtually all of the few known candy poisoning incidents involved parents who poisoned their own children’s candy.
How scary is that, it would certainly turn me off from letting my children eat anything which was given to them.

Halloween is such a fun time for children and Halloween Cake Decorations sound like a great idea.
Hard to believe that people would put pins in candy apples – scary.
One of my neighbours always gives the kids an apple (not a candy apple, just an apple). Don’t think the kids are too impressed – lol

Halloween does look fun . There are some very strange people out there who would do something so cruel to the kids. Thats really funny that your neighbour gives the kids apples, I am also guessing they wouldn’t be too happy about it.
I’ve had some kids come round for Halloween and it was interesting. Not sure if it will ever take off greatly in Australia but your decorations look like it’s worth having a party.

Hi Tania,
Not sure either if Halloween is for Australia. I think the shops would like it. Having a Halloween themed party would be fun though.
We always have a few groups of little kids who turn up, dressed up to the nines, with their parents so I always have a big bowl of goodies near the front door. Maybe I should make something this year. The decorations are fantastic.

Hi Jenny,
Good on you for getting into the spirit of Halloween. The kids would probably love something homemade with ghoulish decorations on top.
Wow is it nearly Halloween time again!!
Thanks for the reminder, I’ll have to top up the lolly jar, too keep the kids in the street at bay
Cheers,
Cade
Hi Cade.
Your welcome, another year has gone so quickly. I never have kids come to our door as we live in a rural area.
Hi Jackie,
We have never done halloween with our boys, even though they bug me every year – asking me if they can go trick or treating and dress up. I think its a huge american tradition, but not sure if its for our aussie kids
I love the idea of the themes, and the idea of trick or treating. I would want to know where my kids are and what they are doing on the night. I guess its a case of keeping our kids safe.
Cheers

Hi Lisa,
Because we have always lived in rural areas, we have never celebrated halloween either but having some halloween decorated cakes could be fun. You are right about safety, I would definately not let a child younger then 13 go by themselves and only in the direct neighbourhood.
Hi Jackie
The cakes look really good, I like the spider cake. We usually get mini cadbury chocolate bars. But we don’t always get children coming to the door and we end up eating them oursleves.
Interesting topic to read about. Maybe it’s because where I came from we never celebrated Halloween and so I’ve never participated in one. But it’s good to know more about other cultures. Thanks for sharing this information.
