Shopping for cake decorating supplies can be a little daunting for the beginner cake decorator. There are so many different tools available and it is really hard to know what to get. I advise you make a list before you start so you don’t over purchase while shopping. If you decide to get your cake decorating supplies online, then you need to do some research.
Things you need to look at when shopping online are:
- price (prices can vary significantly)
- how fast they can ship
- postage cost
- quality of items
- reputable site
- offer money back if not satisfied
As I mentioned above, before you go shopping, do some research about what cake decorating supplies you really need to get you started. Talk to other cake decorators, read books for cake decorating beginners and do some research online. The information is pretty easy to come by.
Below I have put up a basic list of some of the cake decorating supplies you will need to get started.
- A good cake pan
- Turntable
- General kitchen utensils such as metal spatula, serrated edged knife, rubber spatula and measuring cups and spoons
- to put the cake on when icing
- Pastry Bag and a variety of different decorating tips for the bag
- Rolling Pin and smoother if you are decorating with fondant
- Food colouring for your icing
- and a variety of cutters to help you decorate if you are using sugarpaste
The above list is only small, but should get you started with your shopping for cake decorating supplies.
The most important thing is, don’t get caught up in the tools for cake decorating as you may be able to improvise with the kitchen utensils you already have without spending a huge amount of money.

When shopping for cake decorating supplies would you recommend buying a cheapish piping kit – then just throw it away when you’ve used it once? They are such messy things to clean, and never seem as good the second time you use them.

These days you can actually buy disposable piping bags for your tips. I would recommend these, as you can still have the quality tip on the end, but just throw the messy bag away.

My daughter loves making cakes. On occasions the cake has been made, she’s ready to decorate, and then finds that we don’t have all the ingredients she needs!

Yes a list always helps when shopping, although I must say I don’t use one myself and am always forgetting things. Its frustrating when you are in the middle of cooking and you don’t have all the ingredients.
I like your cake decorating tools website, especially your shopping for cake decorating supplies.
With five boys I have made a few (too many) cakes over the years. It would have been good to read a site where I could get tips and hips on what to buy, and what tools I need to make the icing look good!

Being on the road means that being able to purchase online (any supplies) that I need from a company that I can trust is essential.
